How to take the perfect flatlay

A crisp white background, interesting props and your smartphone; all you need for the perfect flatlay. Follow these steps and you’ll be the #flatlayqueen.

1.Use natural light when you can

The most important part of your picture is the light, use daylight whenever you can. It will make your picture look natural and also very bright.

2. Look for a good background

The background of your flatlay may be the most important part of it all. White cabinets always work for a crisp look. Do you want some more texture? Think of bed sheets, cute tiles, or something out of the kitchen cabinets like a wooden cut board or a marble serving tray. Just try some things to find out what you like.

3. Use the grid of your camera

The rule of thirds is probably the first thing you learn when diving in to photography. This rule will help composing your image, and if used right it will make your picture look more interesting. If you place points of interest in the intersections or along the grid lines your picture instantly becomes more balanced and even easier to look at.

Settings > Photo’s & Camera > Switch Grid on

4. Don’t make it too perfect

Although we call it the ‘perfect flatlay’, your picture will be way more interesting if it doesn’t look too perfect. Get a little messy! Wrinkles in your bed sheets, spilt coffee or even the cliche bite out of your croissant will add life to the picture.

• Smartphone, laptop, headphones, even speakers will do the trick
• Books, magazines or papers
• Something shiny like jewelry, keys
• And of course plants
